Cottonmouths are very venemous members of the pit viper family of snakes which are found in swamps and other wetlands in the Southeastern, United States. They called cottonmouths because when threatened, these snakes will open their mouths revealing its white lining as a warning. Although much maligned, Cottonmouths are beautiful animals that should be appreciated and observed from a safe distance. where they pose no threat to humans. This individual was about to shed as evidenced by milky appearance of its eye scales.
